45 years ago i worked in a Hospice. We were appealing then for a funding framework.
We were totally reliant on our wonderful volunteer force for fund raising and (quite honestly being our employees and where i now get my knowledge of working with the third sector & all my community projects).
So 45 years later where are we? Excellent care being cut - redundancies ! That is not a sustainability strategy - what kind of society cant afford end of life care? Is this the best we can do for our loved ones?
As a Learning & Development adviser this is where i came from. The hospice was a learning environment - ENB931 Care of the Dying Patient and Their Family - was the course which changed my life- i wanted to teach. Not nursing of course but i wanted to pass on whatever life skills i had. And i had the encouragement of our then Director of Nursing Marie Ballard.
So, for whatever i am worth i ask YOU to do whatever you can to help our wonderful, excellent Centres of Excellence to survive, to train the ones who come after us, to continue to do what they do for those who can no longer help themselves - sign petitions- give a hand- volunteer- support the hospice shops etc etc you are the innovative people - do it
